Nutrition Is the Foundation of Health
What your pet eats directly affects their energy, coat quality, immune function, weight, and lifespan. Yet pet nutrition is one of the most misunderstood areas of animal care.
Dogs vs. Cats: Different Needs
Dogs are omnivores — they can thrive on a balanced diet that includes proteins, carbohydrates, and vegetables. Cats are obligate carnivores: they need animal protein and cannot synthesize essential nutrients like taurine on their own.
Reading Pet Food Labels
Look for a named protein source (chicken, beef, salmon) as the first ingredient. Avoid foods with excessive fillers, artificial preservatives, or unnamed by-products. AAFCO or FEDIAF certification on the label indicates the food meets minimum nutritional standards.
When to Ask Your Vet
Life stage (puppy, adult, senior), health conditions (kidney disease, obesity, allergies), and breed size all affect dietary needs. Never make dramatic diet changes without guidance from your veterinarian.
